Year 1 Students Reflect on “Mary Star of the Sea”

Reflecting on “Mary Star of the Sea” with OLR Year 1 Students

Last term, our Year 1 students engaged with the beautiful and inspiring story “Mary Star of the Sea” during one of our Religious Education lessons. This story provided a profound opportunity for the students to understand that Mary is like a guiding star, leading us through difficult times and helping us avoid danger.

The sea, much like life, can be beautiful and vast, sometimes still and quiet, and other times wild and dark. Mary is akin to a lighthouse, warning boats and ships away from danger. Similarly, she warns us of potential dangers in our lives, guiding us safely through life’s storms.

During the lesson, students reflected on the story and expressed their understanding in creative ways. They had the opportunity to either:

  • Draw an image of Mary protecting them,
  • Write a prayer to Mary asking for help, or
  • Create a picture of a lighthouse shining its light on us all.

These activities allowed the children to connect deeply with the story and reflect on Mary’s protective and guiding presence in their lives.

Through storytelling and creative expression, our students connect with the divine, finding meaning in their journeys and comfort in Mary’s guiding light. This lesson not only enhanced their understanding of religious concepts but also provided them with a sense of spiritual security and reassurance.

We are proud of our Year 1 students for their thoughtful reflections and heartfelt creations, demonstrating their connection to the story and its message. Their work is a testament to the enduring influence of faith and the comforting presence of Mary in our lives
