In recent years, most Year 6 students at OLR would travel to Canberra, our nation’s capital, to enhance their learning about government. 2020 has been a year like no other for everyone, and the usual excursion to Canberra has not been possible on account of COVID-19 restrictions. As a consequence, and to enhance students’ learning experiences in their final year of primary education, OLR School Principal, Mr. Bernard Cumming, contacted local Federal Member for Dobell, Ms. Emma McBride, to inquire whether she was free to visit the school and speak to the senior students about Australian government and how it works.
When Ms. McBride visited recently, the Year 6 students enjoyed debating the No Homework Bill. A number of students took roles as Speaker, Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, Education Minister, and Shadow Education Minister, just as they would have done on a visit to Parliament in Canberra. A hearty debate ensued. To the delight of the students, the Bill was defeated.
Ms. McBride was very impressed with the OLR students and the great questions the students asked during her visit. Mr. Cumming thanked Emma for taking time out of her busy schedule to visit the school.
